Dr. Roumenina is a senior scientist at Inserm, France, leading a group studying the innate immune complement system in physiology and pathology, with a focus on diseases affecting the kidney. She explores the mechanisms of activation and regulation of the complement cascade in the blood as well as the intracellular complement proteins. Dr. Roumenina is among the pioneers exploring complement in renal cancer, discovering the pro-tumoral role of the plasma complement cascade and the newly discovered intracellular complement proteins.

Whilst complement dysregulation is observed across a broad range of diseases, it remains unclear where complement therapeutics can deliver maximum benefit to patients whilst maintaining healthy immune function.

- Evaluating which indications offer the greatest opportunity for complement intervention and determining where complement biology is most likely to translate into meaningful patient benefit
- Debating the role of complement therapies in acute versus chronic disease settings and identifying how dosing strategies and endpoints may differ between the two
- Exploring the potential for complement therapeutics beyond orphan diseases, including how to position complement modulation within complex, multifactorial conditions where complement is not the primary disease driver, as well as the potential of complement in oncology
- Assessing when complement intervention should occur within the patient journey, including optimal treatment windows, sustainable dosing regimens and approaches to maximizing long-term therapeutic impact
