Yansong Li

Dr. Yansong Li is a trauma immunologist with more than 20 years of experience in translational trauma research and a sustained record of scientific leadership and productivity. He has led the Translational Trauma Immunology Damage Control Resuscitation (TIDCR) Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, and currently at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
His research focuses on traumatic brain injury, polytrauma, hemorrhagic shock, and trauma-induced multiorgan dysfunction and failure. He has particular expertise in developing prehospital immunologic damage control resuscitation and immunodiagnostic strategies to reduce traumatic hemorrhage–associated organ injury and mortality.
Dr. Li’s laboratory develops precision, point-of-injury TIDCR therapies as adjuncts to damage control resuscitation and prolonged field care. The overarching goal is to induce a pro-survival, organ-protective phenotype following traumatic hemorrhage, particularly during prehospital and on-scene care in austere environments.

- Elucidating the mechanistic role of early complement activation in driving ferroptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammasome signalling that contribute to secondary brain injury following traumatic brain injury and hemorrhagic shock
- Presenting preclinical evidence that early complement-directed interventions can therapeutically reprogram interconnected cell death and inflammatory pathways, preserve mitochondrial function and cellular bioenergetics, and mitigate progressive neurological damage after trauma
- Highlighting the translational potential of complement-targeted therapies as a novel precision medicine approach to preventing secondary brain injury and improving outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury and hemorrhagic shock
